Always mindful that others have helped him along the way, Mr. Scriven is steadfast in his commitment to give back to his profession and the community at large. He actively participates in local, state, and national bar associations, having served most recently as president of the 3,900 member Hillsborough County Bar Association.
During his tenure as president of the Hillsborough County Bar Association, Mr. Scriven authored a column entitled "Our Reward For Service." A modified excerpt from that article appears below:
"Our bar association enjoys a long and distinguished history of service to the community through countless lawyers having donated their time, efforts, and financial resources to those less fortunate. It is important that the community understand that our profession is not one hopelessly consumed with self-absorption, greed, and materialism. We should recognize, however, that with society being what it is, the clothes we wear will always be a bigger story than the clothes we donate; our several acts of selflessness will always be overshadowed by one act of selfishness; the deception by one will always be more newsworthy than the pursuit of truth by many; the stories that warm our spirits will always yield to the stories that expose our cold-heartedness; and those of us who serve the community will always be less newsworthy than our colleagues who, in an isolated lapse of judgment, violate their clients' trust. In the end though, as we volunteer our time and serve our community, we should remember that our service should not be in expectation of public acclaim. Our true reward is the service itself."
